Trophy
2006 Quarter 4 Winner Naghi Gohbrial Superior Court
Mr. Ghobrial is very familiar with the recycling infrastructure at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse. He is in a unique position to interface with each of the 50 offices he is required to supervise both as the department's Recycling Coordinator and as the go-to person on ADA issues. When paper pick-ups are late, Mr. Ghobrial sees that barrels are shifted where required to keep from overflowing and to keep excess paper from going into the trash. Mr. Ghobrial is very conscientious about the program and maintains great communication with other court facilities to inform and assist them with recycling. We praise his determination and willingness to take on this large responsbility.
Naghi Ghobrial
2006 Quarter 3 Winner Marcos Rojas Sheriffs
Mr. Rojas has shown remarkable energy in the implementation of various recycling programs for his large and complex department. His efforts include promoting the development of an in-vessel food waste project to compost up to ten tons of food per day at the Pitchess Detention Center. He has been very successful in promoting paper and scrap metal recycling. Finally, Mr. Rojas was instrumental in the development of an energy recycling project for the Central Jail Facility. The Stored Energy Project allows the Department to use low peak, low priced electricty to freeze liquified containers that, during high peak electricity periods, are used to chill the water for air conditioning thus lowering the demand for electicity when it is at its peak price, saving the department over $300,000 a year. Currently, Mr. Rojas is investigating using inmate labor to sort beverage containers from waste, which can generate valuable revenue for their department.

2006 Quarter 2 Winner Elena Robles DPSS
Ms. Robles coordinates the materials management for a total of 56 DPSS District facilities and keeps track of the paper recycled in 50 locations while keeping track of revenue. Ms. Robles and her department reuse corrugated cardboard as much as possible (either by shipping supplies to the other offices or for storing equipment at the warehouse). Ms. Robles also monitors surplus equipment from each of the offices to make sure they either get reused in other offices, they are auctioned, or donated to non-profit organizations. In addtion, Ms. Robles makes certain that the department recycles pallets and surplus metal. She trains new hires on recycling and provides them with recycling materials. Quantification and education is practiced by Ms. Robles to achieve maximum recycling results.
Elena Robles
2006 Quarter 1 Winner Pamela Walker Fire Department
Ms. Walker works in the Inventory and Property Division of the Fire Department's Pacoima facility, and is a 20-year County employee. She was recognized for her recycling efforts, enthusiastic participation, and helpful suggestions in improving recycling at the Fire Department. Ms. Walker has been working on getting various types of recycling programs started, such as a beverage container recycling program. Ms. Walker was very eager to input waste reduction data into the database for her department even before the system was in place. She is the first recycling coordinator award recipient and a role model for other recycling coordinators. Ms. Walker really enjoys assisting her fellow employees in reducing waste, and her advice to other recycling coordinators is: "Just be persistent with trying to get your recycling programs started. Try to open any closed doors you encounter and don't give up!"
